There a lot of generators on the market, and many are available to either hire or buy. Which one is best for you? To answer this question, you really need to consider why you want a generator.
If a generator is required for a one-off event it’s advisable to hire one, as buying one would not be worth it. However, if you need a generator for multiple events, then buying one is likely to be more cost effective.
Costs vary depending on the size, and it makes sense to evaluate the total cost of ownership, not just the initial outlay. Many buyers are often swayed by cheaper alternatives but, in the long run, these can cost more in terms of more regular maintenance, parts and servicing, along with higher on-site fuelling costs.
Remember the saying, ‘Buy cheap, buy twice. Buy once, buy well’.
Convenience is another factor. Obviously, if you own a generator, you have easy access to it and can use it whenever and as often as you need. Generator rental is very easy these days, but requires a little more planning and organisation.
If you buy a generator, you will be responsible for its upkeep, while a rented generator will always be in excellent condition as it’s maintained by the hire company. So, this is something to think about when adding up potential costs. But if buying your own generator saves you money and provides the convenience you need that would be the solution for you.
Consider your requirements and budget and weigh up the pros and cons before you make a decision.
